Runway Reviews: Nanette Lepore, William Rast, Reed Krakoff
(NEW YORK) Nanette Lepore
If New York’s runways are any indication, velvet will be a significant trend this season—one that was seriously explored by Lepore. Gowns, not the designer’s traditional milieu, came down the runway in shimmering velvet jewel tones, setting the opulent mood. An abundance of shine, luxe trimmings on coats, and multi-layers were topped by wool coats in preppy plaids to offer plenty of options for day. One look that’s sure to please? A structured, bell-shaped frock in a perfect red-pink shade.
William Rast
William Rast’s Fall showing nodded to ‘New America,’ complete with live Hendrix-esque “Star Spangled Banner” to kick things off. The looks were classic Americana with more than a dash of Southwestern influence via fringes, beaded headbands and ponchos. Leather and denim dominated, but so did utilitarian pieces in army green. Extra-long button-ups hung to the knees, underneath heavy pea coats on men. Leather looks were not limited to the slim pants, but took the form of corsets and even a full, fitted jumpsuit. Accents included fur tails worn at the hip and long wool shawls, creating an off balance look. Jessica Biel looked on approvingly as Timberlake and creative director Trace Ayala took a quick victory bow as the house band played power chords.
Reed Krakoff
Who is the Krakoff woman? "A utilitarian American re-imagined with a more sensual romantic side," explained Reed Krakoff. For his first eponymous collection, the designer delivered one wearable separate after another. The president and creative director at Coach, Krokoff is well aware what it t
akes to make his everyday woman happy. He delivered for Fall 2010 with wide-leg moleskin pants worn under long cashmere cardigans and oversized sweaters. His suburban-meets-urban ensembles were topped off with sophisticated cropped shearling jackets or felt coats. An expert in the accessory department, Krakoff made sure he had plenty of fash-footwear with Victorian lace-up leather boots, men's oxfords, and leather and fur sandals.
