Spring 2012: Valentino
(PARIS) Valentino
Things got a little lacy at Valentino's star-studded runway today! Under the trusted tutelage of Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, an ultra-decandent Spring collection spellbound front row swans like Jessica Biel, the Courtin-Clarins sisters (Jenna and Virginie), Alexa Chung (posing avec velvet Charlotte Olympia slippers), and Ciara. The design duo caught their stride in a series of sumptuous, upper crust lace dresses, loosely nodding to twentieth century Mexico. This time, peek-a-boo black or cream frocks (mid-thigh or grazing the ankle) dominated the lineup while sunset streaks punctuated with a little pop. Like in a sheer lacy electric pink shirt with matching shorts, an airy cornflower blue strapless creation with a ruffle hem or a reverent Valentino red lace column gown--complete with flat sandals and Frida Kahlo-esque braided updos. Frilly? Oui! Too much? Never! In fact, Piccioli and Chiuri were at the top of their game, whipping up a fanciful, dream-like collection that might just be their best to date.
