Yohji's Tokyo Return

(NEW YORK) After filing for bankruptcy protection last year, Yohji Yamamoto cancelled his men’s shows, instead presenting collections in showroom appointments. It seems the Japanese designer has missed the drama of the runway, though: the company announced today that it will produce a men’s fashion show in Tokyo on April 1. The collection itself is still in the works. “I have been [absent from the] Tokyo fashion shows for almost 20 years,” Yamamoto said in a statement. “The men’s fashion is suffering in Japan, so I hope to light a fire.”

In true Yohji fashion, the show will be more than a simple runway presentation. It will stand alone from Japan Fashion Week (which ends on March 26), and it will take place in one of Tokyo’s historic Olympic stadiums. A spokesperson for the company said the show won’t necessarily be specific to the Fall 2010 season.
